What Does It Take to Be an Evangelist?

Mike Hall delivered a powerful message on the heart of evangelism. He reminded us that evangelism isn’t simply about programs, events, or church activities—it’s about how we live each day as followers of Christ.

Evangelism Is More Than Programs

We often think of evangelism as door knocking, gospel meetings, or mailouts. While those can be useful tools, they are not evangelism in themselves. True evangelism is an attitude. It’s seeing the world through spiritual eyes and seeking every opportunity to point people toward Jesus.

Three Convictions Every Evangelist Needs

Mike emphasized three core convictions that shape a life of evangelism:

  1. A Deep Belief in Heaven
Heaven is real, and it belongs to those who have been saved by the blood of Christ. If we truly believe this, we can’t sit back while people we know and love live without the hope of eternity with God.
  2. A Deep Belief in Hell
Hell is also real, and Scripture is clear that the lost will spend eternity there. This isn’t popular to talk about, but it is biblical truth. Paul wrote, “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men” (2 Corinthians 5:11). If we believe in the reality of eternal punishment, it will move us to action.
  3. Love for Even One Soul
Evangelism begins when we care deeply about just one person’s salvation. Friendship and kindness are good, but they cannot save someone from sin. People need Jesus more than they need us, and sometimes loving them means being willing to sacrifice comfort for their eternal good.

Living It Out

Evangelism is not about having every answer or being perfect at teaching. It’s about loving people enough to act. Mike compared it to a spouse who becomes an “expert” overnight when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer—they study, learn, and fight because someone they love is at risk. Evangelism is the same: we fight for souls because eternity is at stake.

The Call for Us

The world doesn’t ultimately need more friends. It needs more Christians willing to step out in faith and share Jesus. Evangelism is about conviction, urgency, and love in action.

As we reflect on this lesson, may we each consider:

  • Do I really believe in heaven and hell?
  • Do I love at least one soul enough to fight for them?
  • What can I do this week to use my relationships as an opportunity to point someone to Christ?

Let’s live every day on mission, with our eyes on eternity, and with a love that refuses to give up on the lost.
